Plot[]

The episode shows Team Ebisu is scampering out of a forest in Konoha, chasing a cat. Konohamaru runs into Teuchi, the owner of Ramen Ichiraku, who mistook him for Naruto. Upon catching the Tora, gets scratched. While talking to Tsunade, Konohamaru wants a new mission instead lower ones but she refuses. Konohamaru comments that Naruto will become the Hokage before him, which surprised everyone. As Konohamaru and his teammates leave, he comments Naruto will come back. But Tsunade says that Konohamaru is like a second Naruto, than a Hokage. Naruto is soon walking in the wood with Jiraiya and after entering the village, he is spotted by Izumo and his teammate. Soon after Konohamaru and the others run into Sakura.

Right after that, Naruto is happy to be back in Konoha with Jiraiya, and finds out that it hasn't changed much since he left for training with Jiraiya, except that Tsunade's face has now been added to the Hokage monument. Sakura and the others soon spot him, and while Sakura notes Naruto's physical change, Naruto blatantly tells her that she hasn't changed one bit. Konohamaru meets up with them, performing the Sexy Technique in front of all of them, but Naruto tries to reveal his better version, which cause Sakura to punch him and realizing that Naruto hasn't changed a bit either. Naruto later catches up with Tsunade, who wishes to see how much he's learned by putting him up against a certain opponent.

While in Tsunade's office, Naruto reunited with Shikamaru and Temari. However he is happy to see Kakashi and gives him a new Icha Icha book. Tsunade decides to test if Naruto and Sakura are worthy enough to recreate Team 7 and hunt the Akatsuki. They would be doing the same test they did the first time they had become ninja, to take the bell from Kakashi. While walking with Temari, Naruto learns that everyone advanced to a higher rank, and that he is still a genin. However he is happy that Gaara has become the fifth Kazekage and that he still vows to become Hokage.

Meanwhile Jiraiya begins telling Kakashi that the Akatsuki began to make their move which includes capturing the tailed beasts. However they agreed that, Jiraiya would return Naruto's training to Kakashi, after the long period of time Jiraiya and Naruto spent together. The Akatsuki already planned their first step towards the ultimate dream. In Sunagakure, Sasori and Deidara arrives. But their secret agent Yura already cleared the guards to give them access. Meanwhile in Konoha, Naruto and Sakura began the bell test, while Jiraiya, Shizune and Tsunade watch from the shadows.

Naruto begins attacking Kakashi with his shadow clones to catch Kakashi, who has his Sharingan activated, off-guard. However Jiraiya, Tsunade, Shizune who are shown watching the bell test, as well as Kakashi, have seen Naruto's improvement with its timing. Naruto's attempt to catch Kakashi off-guard fails and Kakashi officially started the test.

Meanwhile Sasori and Deidara easily enter Sunagakure after Yura, killed the guards on the entrance. Creating a large clay bird as transportation, Deidara proceeds to find Gaara. Soon after Kakashi begins to attack using taijutsu, and he (as well as Jiraiya, Tsunade and Shizune) notes Naruto and Sakura's improvement as team. Then Deidara manages to incapacitate the scouts who watched the skies above Sunagakure with his explosive clays. Meanwhile, Naruto and Sakura are able to release themselves from a genjutsu. While Kakashi realizes that his old tricks won't work anymore. Back to Sunagakure, Gaara finally faces Deidara, who thought that his infiltration was successful.

As the fight begins, Deidara while riding his large bird clay, evades Gaara's long-ranged attacks. As Gaara rides on his pillar of sand to be on level with Deidara and summons a large amount of sand, he overwhelms his opponent. Back to the bell test, Kakashi begins attacking with ninjutsu, which Naruto and Sakura are able to evade. However Naruto learns Kakashi's weakness and tells it to Sakura.

In Sunagakure, Deidara is on the offensive with his exploding clays. Meanwhile, Kakashi is already tempted to read his new book from Jiraiya. Naruto's plan how to get the bells from Kakashi works by attempting to spoil the ending of the book. He and Sakura happily laugh after Kakashi sees that the bells are not on his pant. To evade Deidara's attacks, Gaara conceals himself within his ultimate defence and the third eye on the outside. Deidara is caught off-guard and is surrounded by sand claws as Gaara prepares his Sand Binding Prison.

As Kakashi is stunned that Naruto and Sakura tricked him about Make-Out Tactics. Tsunade announces the formation of Team Kakashi. Soon after Naruto asks Sakura to go on a date, but she tells him to pay for everything. Naruto looks in his frog wallet and asks her to pay half but she refuses. Meanwhile after numerous attempts, Gaara catches Deidara's left arm and crushes it with Sand Binding Coffin, much to the Suna shinobi's delight. Realizing Gaara's ultimate defence sand, which was infused with chakra, Deidara changes his strategy, attempting to destroy Sunagakure instead. Kankurō reminisces the time when Gaara shared his dream to be Kazekage. Seeing the progress of the battle, Sunagakure makes the necessary precautions to evacuate the villagers and support their Kazekage. Deidara proceeds to drop his explosive C3.

When Naruto into Ramen Ichiraku, Ayame and Teuchi are surprised Upon seeing him. Soon after Iruka arrives, stating it is his treat. However Naruto that Sakura was suppose to come but didn't since he don't know that Iruka was covering the bill. Meanwhile Sakura is seen eating at a restaurant while regretting not taking Naruto's offer to eat at his favorite restaurant but starts to have another bowl of food to eat. Meanwhile Naruto also tells Iruka about his frustrations on being a genin, but is still happy that Gaara is the Kazekage. Soon after a egg falls to the egg, which makes Naruto confused.

In Sunagakure, Gaara manages to protect the village from Deidara's C3 using his sand, though it costs him a large amount of chakra. Deidara reveals that when Gaara crushed his arm, he managed to mix some of his explosive clays with sand. Deidara activates the clay bomb ants and blows up the shell of protective sand around Gaara. When their Kazekage become vulnerable due to the loss of the sand protection, the Sunagakure shinobi try to attack Deidara, still riding his clay bird, to no avail. Already weak, with his last bit of power, Gaara manages to move the sand he used to protect the village from C3 out of the village. As Gaara falls, Deidara succeeds in capturing Gaara, much to Kankuro's horror.

As Kankuro chases down the two Akatsuki members. He attacks one of the members using his three puppets; Karasu, Kuroari and Sanshōuo. However, Kankuro's opponent, Sasori seems very familiar with Kankuro's techniques, as he destroys Kuroari and Sanshōuo without breaking a sweat.

While Yurika, a decoder heads to decode the message about what has happened in the Sunagakure. Soon after Team Kakashi is walking to Tsunade's office but Sakura tells Naruto not to complain about the mission they get. However Yurika runs into the team, while Naruto angrily comments that Yurika doesn't have any manners. Wile inside Tsunade's office, as Naruto complains about the mission his team had, he tells Tsunade that Hiruzen was way better than her. Therefore Sakura hits Naruto so she doesn't witness Tsunade's temper. However Tsunade, Iruka and Shizume comment that Naruto hasn't change at all. However the decoder delivers word about the message from Sunagakure. So Team Kakashi's mission is to find out anything and assist the Suna in any way they can. After Kankuro's puppets are destroyed. It turns out that the creator of all three puppets is none other than Sasori of the Red Sand himself. Sasori shoots his tail at Kankuro and injects the poison in him. Kankuro soon collapses due to the poison spreading throughout his entire body and blacks out. At the gate of Konoha, Jiraiya tells Naruto not to use "that technique" before heading off.

When the meeting in Sunagakure concluded, someone rushes in and tells them what happened to Kankurō. Sasori catches up to Deidara and the two were ready to make off with their target. In Konoha, Temari is seen off by Shikamaru which surprised her. Meanwhile Kankuro is later found and brought back to Suna's hospital. The poison spreads in his body and that no one in the Suna knows how to extract it. En route to the Sunagakure, Team Kakashi spot Temari, who joins them upon hearing what happened to Gaara. While travelling, Naruto angrily yells about the situation Gaara is in. This makes Sakura sad as she remembers when she first saw Naruto during their childhood, but she couldn't go near him because she was with her parents. However upon hearing this, Temari sees how similar he and Gaara are. Despite this Temari thanks Naruto for caring about Gaara. Meanwhile Kankuro's condition worsens, and his body is in such a weak condition that he could barely speak. Despite this, he is able to tell Baki about Sasori. Therefore Baki approaches Chiyo and Ebizo, he informs them about Gaara's capture by the Akatsuki, and Kankuro's condition. Despite displaying disinterest, Chiyo still wants to see her grandson, Sasori, one more time.

Soon after Deidara and Sasori arrive at the Akatsuki hideout. The Akatsuki leader gathers the other members, using an astral projection technique, and they begin a three-day long technique to extract the One-Tailed Shukaku from Gaara and seal it in a giant statue. At Sunagakure Chiyo claims that even her expertise is not enough to counteract Sasori's poison. At Konoha, Tsunade foresees the difficulty of Team Kakashi's mission, and orders Team Guy to back them up. Upon reaching Sunagakure with Temari, she leads Team Kakashi to Kankuro. However Chiyo tries to attack Kakashi.

But her assault on Kakashi was stopped when her brother tells her to look closer. Apparently mistaken as Kakashi bears resemblance to the White Fang of the Konohagakure, Kakashi's father, Chiyo alibies that she just pretended to be senile. Soon after Sakura begins her examination of Kankuro and discovers that the poison in his body is one that destroyed the cells after infiltrating the muscles. While Naruto and Kakashi wait outside with Chiyo and Ebizo. Meanwhile, the Akatsuki continues their extraction of Shukaku from Gaara's body. Sakura, on the other hand, succeeds in extracting the poison from Kankuro's body cells.

Team Guy is sent as reinforcements. But Tenten gets annoy by Lee and Guy trying to get to Sunagakure quickly. Meanwhile Kankuro regains consciousness, and informs the group that he took a piece of the enemy's clothing with which they could use to track them. Sakura is able to administer an antidote that should clear up any residual poison inside Kankuro's body. After Kankuro drinks the antidote, he begs. Naruto to save Gaara. Naruto acquiesces, stating with a smile that Gaara will have to owe him one later on.

As the Akatsuki extraction continues, Pakkun relays his discovery of the Akatsuki's hideout to Kakashi. As Team Kakashi heads out to the Akatsuki's hideout, along with Chiyo. On the way, Chiyo tells them about the nine Tailed Beasts in the world, two of which are sealed within Gaara and Naruto. Pakkun informs Team Guy that Kakashi and the others are headed to the Land of Rivers, which is between Sunagakure and Konohagakure. Knowing that the Konoha shinobi are approaching with Chiyo, Kisame volunteers to fight Guy, as Kakashi's group is confronted by Itachi.

As Gaara's beast is being extracted from him, Team Kakashi and Team Guy are confronted by Itachi and Kisame respectively. Kisame is on the offensive with Water Release: Exploding Water Colliding Wave, having the terrain to his advantage and Team Guy plans for counter-attack. Kakashi warns his team of the danger of Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan, and reveals what he's discovered to be its weakness. Naruto has been put under a genjutsu by Itachi before he and Kakashi proceed to attack. Guy manages to disarm Kisame, who in turn forms water clones to trap Neji, Lee and Tenten.

The battle between Guy and Kisame intensifies. Guy brings out his nunchaku to compensate for Kisame's Samehada sword, but takes a beating from Kisame's Water Release technique. After being submerged by Kisame's attacks, Guy resorts to opening up six of his Eight Gates, and defeats Kisame with the Morning Peacock. Meanwhile, Naruto realizes that he's in a genjutsu that Itachi casted upon him, and recalls his training with Jiraiya to try to dispel Itachi's illusion on his own.

After the visions that Itachi makes him suffer, Naruto releases himself from the genjutsu with the help of Chiyo and Sakura. Distracted and immobilised by Kakashi's shadow clone, Itachi takes a direct hit from Naruto's Big Ball Rasengan. Meanwhile, Neji frees himself, Rock Lee, and Tenten after Guy defeats Kisame. Later, the two Konoha teams find out that the two foes that they just defeated are neither Itachi nor Kisame, but are Yura and another rogue Hidden Sand ninja named Mukade, who the Akatsuki leader used to stall the Konoha teams.

However before leaving, Chiyo goes on to explain that the tailed beasts' hosts were individuals burdened with the task of carrying the beasts within them, such as Gaara and Naruto. She also says that if their beast is removed, then they will die. As the two teams rest from their battles, the Akatsuki leader sends out Zetsu to dispose of Itachi and Kisame's clone's bodies. Once they are close to the location, Kakashi tells the team to take a break.

Team Guy and Team Kakashi both finish their breaks and go on towards the Akatsuki lair. After noticing Naruto's agitation towards Gaara's capture, Chiyo is explained to by Kakashi that Naruto is himself a jinchuriki. Chiyo then reveals that she was the one who sealed the One-Tailed Shukaku in Gaara, to protect Sunagakure. Meanwhile, the Akatsuki finishes the sealing of Gaara's tailed beast, thereby killing him. Outside the base, Teams Guy and Kakashi arrive, prepared to break into the cave and retrieve Gaara.

However they find out that there is a barrier protecting the Akatsuki hideout, being generated by five forbidden tags in the nearby area. Neji pinpoints the tags' locations with his Byakugan, and Team Guy dispatches to remove the tags and disables the barrier, allowing Team Kakashi to enter the hideout. Meanwhile, the Akatsuki members end their astral projection technique and leave the hideout, except for Deidara and Sasori, who are ordered by the Akatsuki leader to dispose of the intruders.

After Team Guy and Team Kakashi breaks the Five-Seal Barrier, Team Kakashi manages to enter the Akatsuki hideout. Inside, Deidara and Sasori, positioned over Gaara's corpse, are waiting for them. Meanwhile, Team Guy fall into a trap as a result of breaking the Five-Seal Barrier. Each member is attacked by a clone of themselves possessing the same power, weapons, and techniques as the original. Naruto chases Deidara, who is riding on his clay bird with Gaara, and Kakashi follows, leaving Sakura and Chiyo to fight Sasori by themselves. Chiyo attacks Sasori and some of the kunai manage to hit Sasori's Akatsuki outfit. He then shows his puppet armour, Hiruko, and begin his battle with Chiyo.

But Chiyo explains to Sakura that Sasori used to be one of the best puppeteers in Sunagakure, however he left the village after he started making puppets out of humans. Chiyo also reveals that Sasori's true body is hiding within his favourite puppet, Hiruko, and the only way to kill Sasori is to first destroy his puppet. Chiyo and Sakura are able to dodge Sasori's poison-laced attacks and successfully demolish the puppet by using Sakura's strength. Sasori then emerges from the puppet's remains. Just outside, Deidara begins telling Naruto and Kakashi how much stronger Sasori is compared to himself.

With his puppet destroyed, Sasori reveals himself to Chiyo and Sakura, looking no older than when he left his village over twenty years ago. Meanwhile, Temari's team, along with Kankuro and Ebizo, continue to make their way towards the Land of Rivers, where Ebizō tells the others of the strongest ninja in Sunagakure's history, the Third Kazekage, and his mysterious disappearance. Back in the hideout, Sasori summons the Third Kazekage puppet, whom he had kidnapped and turned into a Human Puppet many years ago. Using its weapons, which are even more dangerous than Hiruko's, Sasori is able to catch Sakura in a cloud of poison gas.

However Sakura manages to escape the poison gas cloud by using an explosive tag on herself. Chiyo calls forth the "Mother" and "Father" puppets, that Sasori had modelled out of his dead parents as a child, to fight him with. They manage to hold down the Third Kazekage for a while until Sasori releases the Third's secret technique: Iron Sand. Meanwhile, Team Guy are having trouble fighting their clones and showing exhaustion from the battle. Elsewhere, Naruto and Kakashi manage to avoid Deidara's clay bombs and keep up with him.

The Third Kazekage, being a Human Puppet, was built to retain the chakra the body once had when it was alive, allowing the Third to use his special Iron Sand techniques. The Iron Sand clogged the mechanism in the "Mother" and "Father" puppets, as well as Chiyo's puppet's right arm. Chiyo remembered back to when Sasori was a child and created the "Mother" and "Father" puppets to try to get parental love. Chiyo used a willing Sakura as a puppet and had her dodge the Iron Sand techniques to get close to Sasori.

But Sasori attacks with an Iron Sand pyramid and prism, but Sakura is able to fend them off, causing a cave-in in the lair. Sasori then uses the Iron Sand to create a makeshift globe-model out of randomly growing spikes of iron, one of which hits Sakura and paralyses her with poison. With a one last attack from the Third Kazekage puppet, Sasori attempts to kill the seemingly helpless Sakura, only to discover that Sakura is somehow immune to his poison and she destroys the Third Kazekage puppet with a single punch.

Then Sakura reveals to Sasori that she brought an antidote to his poison. Meanwhile, Deidara attempts to split up Naruto and Kakashi by creating a swarm of explosive jumping crickets out of his clay and having them pursue Kakashi. Kakashi makes a shadow clone as a decoy, and the crickets, mistaking the clone for the real Kakashi, detonate harmlessly. Sakura and Chiyo ready themselves for the battle with Sasori, who reveals the reason behind his eternal youth: he transformed himself into a human puppet.

Since Sasori is overwhelming them initially. Sakura manages to later destroy Sasori's puppet body, but he reforms back. Seeing this, Chiyo uses the White Secret Technique: The Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets, which Sasori counters with his Red Secret Technique: Performance of a Hundred Puppets. Sakura and Chiyo, with the help of her Ten Puppets seem to trap and defeat Sasori using Sealing Technique: Lion Closing Roar, but, under cover of the battle, Sasori secretly transfers the only living part of his body — his core — into another puppet, and tries to attack Chiyo from behind. Sakura notices this and intervenes, forcing Sasori to stab her through her torso.

However Chiyo injects the last remaining antidote into Sakura, and finally kills Sasori by stabbing him through his core using the "Father" and "Mother" puppets. With Sasori immobilised, Chiyo revives the nearly-dead Sakura using her Reincarnation Ninjutsu. As he dies, Sasori tells Sakura where he had planned to meet with one of his spies, who had been secretly working as one of his former Akatsuki partner, Orochimaru's, subordinate. Meanwhile, as Kakashi and Naruto are pursuing Deidara, Kakashi reveals his plan to activate his Mangekyo Sharingan.

As Team Guy continues to fight their clones. Neji explains to each member of the team that they are growing weaker as the fight drags on, and their clones, being non-human, remain as strong as they were when they were formed. Lee realises that the only way for them to defeat their clones is to become stronger than they were when they first started fighting. After remembering their training, they remember their resolve to constantly become stronger. This gives them the strength needed to overpower and destroy their clones.

As Kakashi now reveals his Mangekyo Sharingan. He plans to use his inter-dimensional warping technique, Kamui to kill Deidara, but due to lack of needed stamina and Deidara's constant attempts to break free from the defined space, Kakashi only manages to warp Deidara's right elbow which would make Deidara defenceless, losing both of his hands. They follow Deidara into the forest and Naruto manages to knock Deidara off his clay bird, and has his clones take away the bird's head and begin digging into it to free Gaara's body. Deidara watches from a safe distance and muses that he has been handicapped by the Fifth Kazekage and the "Copy Ninja", but was discovered. Right as Naruto prepares to kill Deidara with a Rasengan, Deidara manages to swap himself with a clay clone. Angered, Naruto's Nine-Tailed Fox chakra begins to emerge, leading Naruto to transform to his two-tailed form. Kakashi sees this and remembers Jiraiya mentioning the cloak of chakra.

After Naruto is taken over by the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra, he soon sprouts two tails, and the clone beside Kakashi disappears. Kakashi then uses a seal that Jiraiya gave him to suppress it as a precaution to prevent Naruto from going beserk and unleashing his rage. When Sakura and Chiyo arrived, Deidara, who is hiding in the bushes, decides to flee as he is at a big disadvantage. However, Neji's Byakugan finds Deidara the moment he emerges out of the bushes. They start chasing him down, eventually cornering him in a small grove, with Naruto and the others coming to help. Finding his clay bird, Deidara bites part of it off and begins chewing it up. Announcing the unveiling of his "ultimate work of art" is about to happen, Deidara swells up and seemingly self-detonates.

Everyone flees for their lives, but the blast radius is too quick. However, the explosion is countered by Kakashi's Kamui, which is able to warp it to a different dimension just in time at the cost of his exhaustion. The clones of Naruto holding Gaara then get Sakura to help him. However, she fails to bring him back to life, and the group mourns Gaara's death. Though they all exhibit pain, a traumatised Naruto starts chastising them, saying that he and Gaara were the only people who cared that the two of them were neglected their whole lives, and bemoans how he can't save Gaara or Sasuke. Now seeing Naruto's emotions as a friend for Gaara, Chiyo moves over to Gaara's body and uses a Reincarnation Ninjutsu to resurrect him.

While Chiyo has a hard time using her Reincarnation Ninjutsu, Naruto volunteers to her to use his chakra with her dying chakra. As she agrees to his offer, she tells him to place his hands on top of hers. While Chiyo continues the technique, she begins to reflect on how Konoha and Sunagakure have acted in the past, and she passes down to Naruto and Sakura her wisdom for the future. Chiyo then tells Naruto that he knows Gaara's pain and that Gaara knows his pain. She asks Naruto to protect Gaara as her finall words to him, and Naruto closes his eyes after hearing this. In a vision, a young Naruto runs to Gaara by calling out to him. As Gaara sees his younger self, the young Naruto appears next to him. In reality Naruto is happy that Gaara is back, alive and well however Gaara is surprised to see Naruto. To his shock, Gaara finds himself surrounded by the team who rescued him and shinobi from Sunagakure celebrating his return. As Naruto gets knocked over by Matsuri, Kankuro has a chat with him. Kankuro thanks Naruto for saving Gaara, but Naruto says that Chiyo did with with a weird technique but is now resting. Naruto thinks that Chiyo will wake up soon, but Temari and Kankuro soon reveal that Chiyo gave her life to rescue Gaara, shocking Naruto and unavoidably saddening Sakura. Naruto then understands Chiyo's final words to him, and as Gaara struggled to get up. Naruto helps him and the stand next to Sakura who is mourning Chiyo's death as Ebizo is next to her. Gaara then asks his villagers and the two rescue teams to pay their respects to Chiyo.

Soon after Baki sees the villagers and the rescue teams with Gaara. As Baki thanks Naruto for rescuing Gaara. Naruto tells him that he didn't do all the work. Which makes the rescue teams smile. As they are about to walk in the village, Gaara tells Naruto and Kankuro to let Chiyo go first. As shinobi walk with Chiyo's body, Ebizo tells her that they are home now. Afterwards Deidara, revealing that the self-detonation was caused by his clone, survives his battle and begins to search for his missing arm. Meanwhile, Zetsu and his subordinate, Tobi, who wishes to join Akatsuki, search Sasori's remains for his ring, only to temporarily lose it after Tobi drops it in a crack in the rubble of the destroyed hideout. Deidara later finds the two searching for his own ring and tells Zetsu that he has fulfilled his quota. However, Tobi insults Deidara repeatedly by accident and ends up in a stranglehold in the neck by Deidara using his legs. The Konoha ninja begin to leave Sunagakure after their mission. The Konoha and Suna ninja pay their respects at Chiyo's grave. Then at the entrance of the village, Naruto and Gaara shake hands before departing. On the way back to Konoha, Might Guy gets upset about Kakashi slowing him down, and gives him a piggyback ride, much to Naruto, Neji, Sakura and Tenten's disgust. However Lee thinks it's training and asks Lee to go on his back. But Neji angrily refuses. In Konoha, Danzo gives Sai instructions for his secret mission after joining Team Kakashi.

Now back in Konoha, Rock Lee and Guy finished their race to the gate. As Naruto, Neji, Sakura and Tenten become exhausted from running. All four agree that they themselves thought Lee and Guy would be out of it by now. As Lee believed he won the race, Guy says he was first place while Lee was in third place. Guy then tells Lee that he was third place because Kakashi was in second place which shocks him. However Lee decides to train so he can get second place, and Guy agrees to help much to everyone's annoyance. However Guy says that they have to take Kakashi to the hospital first.

Now inside the hospital, Kakashi rests in a bed, while Sakura tells Tsunade about the information the dying Akatsuki member, Sasori gave her: that he was supposed to meet with one of his spies from within Orochimaru's ranks in ten days at the Tenchi Bridge. As four days had already passed, Naruto realizes the need of another team-mate and so, starts searching Konoha for a willing recruit. He runs into Team 8, but they are unable to help, as they are assigned a mission of their own. Later, just as Choji agrees to help Naruto, the two and Shikamaru are attacked by Sai.

While unable to identify Sai, Naruto, Choji and Shikamaru attempt to capture him, but Sai withdraws. Soon afterwards Ino is shown asking her teammates to hurry up because Asuma is looking for them because they have a mission. Choji explained what happen, Ino is surprised to see Naruto again and happily waves to her. As Choji asks if he should explain if he wasn't referring to Naruto as a weirdo, Shikamaru tells hi to forget about explaining things to Ino. Now concerned that the Akatsuki might soon come to Konoha looking for the Nine-Tailed Fox, the village elders of Konoha Council confront Tsunade, and reveal that Shizune spoke to them. Tsunade then stares angrily at Shizune. They propose that Tsunade keep Naruto in Konoha and not send him to missions outside the village. Tsunade declines, and promises to protect Konoha with her own life if Naruto is captured. However, she is still forced to compromise with Danzo by adding Sai as a new member to Team Kakashi. With Kakashi in the hospital, Tsunade temporarily replaces him with an Anbu member named Yamato and tells him to keep an eye on Sai. Later, Naruto and Sakura meet their new team members, however Naruto is immediately angered upon Sai's appearance.

Since Yamato is taking leadership of Team Kakashi, Sai, while devoid of any human feelings or emotions, insults Naruto and Sakura while angers them both. While preparing to set off, Sai receives an envelope from an Anbu Root shinobi containing secret orders from Danzō. Jiraiya then meets with Tsunade and Yamato in Kakashi's hospital room to brief Yamato on the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed within Naruto, detailing the "demon fox's cloak", and revealing a scar on his chest he got from Naruto when the latter ascended to a four-tailed form. Finally, the new Team Kakashi sets off on their new mission to capture and intercept the spy in Orochimaru's subordinates, and gather information about Sasuke.

As Team Kakashi heads out for the Tenchi Bridge. Sakura and Naruto come down hard at Sai for making fun of their former team-mate, Sasuke. Seeing the tension in the team, Yamato decides they need to improve on teamwork and uses a Wood Release technique to create a wooden cage, threatening to lock the trio up unless they behave. Sakura is shocked to see Yamato using the secret techniques that only the First Hokage was said to possess. Given an ultimatum between being locked up or spending the night at a hot springs by Yamato, the team chooses to visit the springs to improve team cohesion. Despite this fact, Naruto still despises Sai.

While Sakura sees Sai drawing by a river and finds out that he has artistic talent, but has never given titles to anything he ever drew. Naruto and Sakura begin to realize the reason behind Sai's repulsive personality. After the hot springs, the team heads off to the Tenchi Bridge to meet with Sasori's spy. Yamato, being suspicious of traps, suggests to the team to alter their route and go through a forest. Camping for the night, Yamato then creates a two story house by using his Wood Release technique. Inside the house, the team formulates their plan of capturing the spy.

Soon after Yamato designs a mock test for his team to see how everyone coordinated with each other. Naruto is paired with Sai despite his objections, and Sakura is assigned to support Yamato. Yamato conducts a simulation of the meeting, with himself as "the spy", to gauge Naruto and Sai's abilities and teamwork. After Naruto makes a mistake, Sai immobilises him and goes off alone. Naruto is angered with Sai for not acting as a comrade would, but resolves to work together with him to get Sasuke back. Sai reveals to Sakura that he has no emotions, and little understanding of them, as a part of his training in Anbu Root.

While at the location Yamato disguises himself as Sasori within Hiruko, and goes to meet "the spy" at the Tenchi Bridge. The spy is revealed to be Kabuto, who spills out the location of Orochimaru's current hideout. Before the meeting could finish, Orochimaru appears and interrupts the two. While Kabuto initially seems frightened by Orochimaru's appearance, he stops the ruse and turns around to attack Yamato disguised as Sasori, revealing his and Orochimaru's trap. Seeing Yamato's Wood Release technique, Orochimaru recognises him as one of his test subjects in Konoha years ago, when the latter tried to replicate the Wood Release from First Hokage's DNA by injecting it in the bodies of numerous unborn infants, out of which only Yamato survived. Orochimaru then tells Yamato to call out Naruto, Sakura and Sai from where they are hiding.

As Yamato signals Naruto, Sakura and Sai to appear on the bridge. Once he sees Naruto, Orochimaru begins mocking him and compares him to Sasuke, which causes the Nine-Tails' chakra to leak from an enraged Naruto's body and turns him into the three-tailed form. Meanwhile, Yamato remembers Jiraiya speaking of the appearance of number of tails on Naruto during their training, and had specifically warned of Naruto's four-tailed form.

Sakura and Sai watch in a mix of shock and surprise as the chakra surrounding Naruto's body begins to engulf the air. As Orochimaru mentions Sasuke's name again, Naruto grows a second tail and rushes at him with superhuman speed, punching Orochimaru in the face and causing him to go through several yards worth of trees. As Orochimaru makes his way back to the bridge, the part of his face where Naruto struck him has peeled, revealing the face of Gen'yūmaru, the host body Orochimaru is currently occupying. Using his Face Copying Technique, Orochimaru reapplies his face as he remarks how Naruto is finally beginning to act like a jinchūriki; Kabuto himself states that Naruto, using the Nine-Tailed Fox's power, has grown considerably in strength.

Yamato recalls his conversation with Jiraiya, Tsunade and Kakashi at the Konoha Hospital, where Kakashi and Jiraiya were warning him about Naruto's "Nine-Tails' Cloak Form". Jiraiya had told Yamato that other than the time where Tsunade nearly killed him for peeking on her when she was nude, the only other time he had almost died was when Naruto entered his four-tailed form. Jiraiya explained that whenever Naruto gave in to anger, the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra would begin to leak out and envelop him. As Naruto's anger and rage grew, he would begin to grow more tails. On top of that, Naruto could only maintain his consciousness up to three tails; if he were to grow a fourth, his mind would succumb to the Nine-Tails' influence and he would instinctively attack on pure rage alone. Jiraiya likens Naruto's Version 2 form to being a mini version of the Nine-Tailed Fox itself. Jiraiya revealed to the group that when Naruto enters into his four-tailed form, the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox burns his skin off, causing immense pain and leaving Naruto to be covered by just blood and chakra. After the transformation subsides, the Nine-Tails' chakra then begins to heal him; the process of egregious damage followed by rapid recovery is shortening Naruto's lifespan. Tsunade had asked how this is even possible, and Jiraiya had explained that the seal the Fourth Hokage had used was beginning to weaken over time, explaining why Naruto was succumbing to the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra much more during his bouts of anger as opposed to when he was younger. Tsunade, Jiraiya and Kakashi tell Yamato that he is the only one who can keep Naruto in check since he has the power of the First Hokage in his blood.

Back on the bridge, Orochimaru realises that Yamato is team captain only because Naruto is a jinchūriki, citing that Konoha should be grateful for his experiments. When Kabuto asks what he means, Orochimaru reveals that back when he was a Konoha shinobi, he harvested DNA cells from the remains of the First Hokage and attempted to transplant them into babies and children; none of them survived, however. Before he could officially terminate the experiment and dispose of the subjects, he had been caught by the Third Hokage with another experiment in another laboratory, forcing him to flee Konoha. He realises that one of those babies who had been injected with the First Hokage's cells had survived, and that the child is none other than Yamato. Sakura recalls Yamato creating the wooden cage and how she wondered how Yamato was able to use the First's technique, and finally understands the reasoning. Orochimaru adds that the First Hokage had the ability to control tailed beasts, and that since Yamato has the power of the First within him, Konoha assigned him to keep watch on Naruto and control him if need be.

When Naruto demands that Orochimaru and Kabuto return Sasuke to them, the duo state that Sasuke came to them of his own accord. Orochimaru tells Naruto that if he wishes to know anything about Sasuke then he would have to beat it out of him. Naruto gives in even more to the Nine-Tails' influence and grows a third tail. The sprouting of the third tail causes the chakra in the air to intensify, causing a burning sensation to everyone else on the bridge. Sai realises that Naruto's true power comes from the demon fox, and Orochimaru, after staring into Naruto's changing pupils, senses the burgeoning Nine-Tailed Fox within. Naruto's three-tailed form then begins to form a chakra vortex above them.

An infuriated Naruto, now in his three-tailed form, prepares to attack Orochimaru. Kabuto, sensing the attack, decides to strike Naruto from behind with his Chakra Scalpel. Naruto notices him coming and emits a roar, and his chakra sends Kabuto flying backwards into Sakura, knocking her out. Kabuto continues to soar through the bridge, with Sai and Yamato moving out of the way, as he crashes into a tree in the woods. Naruto's attack ends up destroying the Tenchi Bridge, and he goes after Orochimaru, who is on the other side of the bridge. Sai claims that it is the perfect time for his real mission to start, and using his Super Beast Imitating Drawing technique creates a giant ink bird. He begins to fly in Naruto and Orochimaru's direction while Sakura, who is knocked out, begins to fall off the bridge. Yamato asks Sai to catch her, but Sai, despite being able to do so, avoids her and lets her fall. Yamato uses his Wood Release ability to steady the collapsing bridge and to catch Sakura.

On the other side, the three-tailed Naruto manages to rip Orochimaru's arm off. Orochimaru, however, uses a body replacement technique that causes him to materialise and regurgitate a new body from his mouth, restoring the limb he had lost. Orochimaru claims that Naruto still isn't good enough and that he's not as strong as Sasuke. In the woods, Kabuto uses his chakra to heal his wounds, while remarking that he finally understands why the Akatsuki are after Naruto, having experienced a sample of the true power of a jinchūriki.

Naruto begins to fade into the recesses of his mind, where he finds himself in a dark area covered with water. However, as the light appears, he sees Sasuke running. Naruto attempts to follow him, but is unable to run through the water quickly enough to catch Sasuke, who is riding on top of the water. As the water rises, Naruto struggles to move underwater as Sasuke disappears from view. Naruto recalls his last fight with Sasuke, and how he was unable to prevent his friend from defecting and joining Orochimaru. He berates himself for lacking the strength to stop Sasuke, and vows that he will not allow Sasuke to break the bond of friendship they have between them. Naruto then begins to float through the water until he reaches a huge cage. Naruto begins to slip through the bars of the cage, which is where the Nine-Tailed Fox is imprisoned. The demon fox holds Naruto in his palms as he begins to allow his power to take over Naruto.

In the real world, the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox begins to rip, burn and peel away Naruto's skin, leaving just blood and chakra; his peeled skin is soon incinerated by the chakra. Naruto sprouts a fourth tail, and enters into his Version 2 form. Yamato and Sakura notices a smoke-like trail left by his chakra while Sai observes the transformation from above. Yamato stays with Sakura while creating a wood clone to find Naruto. Naruto's painful transformation causes him to emanate a wave of chakra, which cracks the trees around them and bursts the giant ink bird Sai is riding on. The Yamato wood clone manages to protect itself by using Wood Release: Wood Locking Wall, forming a wooden shield. Orochimaru, who also survives the attack, states that Naruto has managed to pique his interest, and wonders what the outcome will be. The Yamato wood clone then sees Naruto's four-tailed form, and curses himself for being unable to prevent it. Naruto, now having no skin, no conscious hold on his body and covered only in blood and chakra, lets out a devastating roar.

Naruto, in his four-tailed form, begins fighting against Orochimaru. Orochimaru attempts to use his snakes to grab a hold of Naruto, but the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra end up incinerating the snakes. As the chakra begins to burn Orochimaru as well, he uses his body replacement technique to regurgitate a new body out of his mouth before the old one is incinerated. Retaining the bottom half of a snake, he slithers in a rapid manner towards Naruto and punches Naruto in the face. Naruto is able to grow another fox head and claws out his chakra and manages to bisect Orochimaru. Using his Gathering of the Snakes technique, Orochimaru is able to connect and regenerate both of his halves. He attempts to finish Naruto off by spitting out one thousand snakes, each armed with a sword in their mouths. However, Naruto uses one hand to create a devastating blast of pure chakra that incinerates the snakes and sends Orochimaru flying. Sai and the Yamato wood clone are unable to interfere due to the intensity of the battle; the wood clone, however, informs Yamato that Naruto has indeed reached his four-tailed form.

Sakura and Yamato are approached on the remains of the Tenchi Bridge by Kabuto, who wonders how Konoha knew that he was to meet Sasori at this time and place. Kabuto states that not even the other Akatsuki members knew of the meeting, and since Sasori isn't the type to give up information under torture, he must have been captured or killed. When Sakura tells him that it's the latter, Kabuto finds joy in it. He tells Yamato and Sakura that Sasori bore a grudge towards Orochimaru and always claimed that he would kill him, and therefore must have told them about his secret meeting in order for them to kill Orochimaru on his behalf.

On the other side of the destroyed bridge, Naruto prepares himself to use the ultimate tailed beast technique - Tailed Beast Ball. Yamato's wood clone wonders how Naruto is still able to move despite having so much chakra on his body, and Orochimaru echoes the sentiment, claiming that that degree of dense chakra should weigh him down. As Naruto swallows the chakra balls, the increased density does indeed cause him to sink into the ground; nonetheless, he fires the Tailed Beast Bomb as a beam towards Orochimaru. The Sannin tries to block the move by summoning Triple Rashōmon, one of his highest defensive techniques, but the Triple Rashōmon is completely obliterated by the Tailed Beast Bomb. At the end of his rope, Orochimaru resorts to using his Sword of Kusanagi in an attempt to impale Naruto. While the sword does hit him, it does not impale; instead, Naruto is send flying through the air and into a wall near the bridge. Sakura, Yamato and Kabuto witness Naruto's four-tailed form for the first time, and Kabuto remarks that this is the closest Naruto has ever gotten to fully transforming into the Nine-Tailed Fox; Sakura is terrified at Naruto's appearance.

Naruto, in his four-tailed form, is pinned against the side of a cliff by Orochimaru's Sword of Kusanagi. However, the Sword of Kusanagi is unable to pierce Naruto's body due to the Nine-Tails' chakra coating it. Orochimaru retracts the sword and slowly begins his descent back to his body. Sai is observing Orochimaru, unaware that he is being watched by Yamato's wood clone. Orochimaru states that Gen'yūmaru's body is beginning to reject him and that he is at his limit right now, though he comforts himself over the thought of still having Sasuke.

Kabuto states that he is surprised that Naruto would go this far to save Sasuke, claiming that the boy is gone and only the monster remains. His words cause Sakura to remember Naruto's promise to her - that he would bring Sasuke back no matter what, and that as his nindo, he would not go back on his promise. Sakura runs towards him in tears, despite Yamato's warning. She attempts to tell Naruto to change back, but Naruto simply smacks her aside with his tail, harming her. Before he can kill her, Yamato uses his Wood Release ability to create tree trunks to bind Naruto. Kabuto heads towards Sakura, and Yamato, believing that he is about to finish off a wounded Sakura, binds him as well. Kabuto tells him that he is actually attempting to save Sakura, and he heals her wounds to the best of his ability. He tells them that they share a common enemy - the Akatsuki - and that he is sparing and saving their lives just so that they can continue to dwindle down their numbers. As Kabuto leaves, Naruto manages to break out of the wooden restraints. Yamato uses the Hokage-Style Sixty-Year-Old Technique — Kakuan Entering Society with Bliss-Bringing Hands, which utilises the power of the First Hokage's Wood Release and the crystal gem in the First Hokage's Necklace (which Naruto is wearing) to suppress and seal a tailed beast's chakra. With excruciating effort and pain on both Yamato and Naruto's side, Yamato begins to revert Naruto back to his humane self.

Meanwhile, Sai approaches Orochimaru, claiming that he means no harm and that he is only an envoy of Danzō Shimura sent to relay a message. Orochimaru is surprised that Danzō is still alive and agrees to hear the message, but warns Sai to choose his words very carefully, lest he get killed. Sai responds that he cannot choose his words carefully as he can only relay the exact message Danzō told him. As he smiles at Orochimaru, the Sannin launches a sword towards Sai.

Sai conveys a message from his superior, Danzō Shimura, to Orochimaru. Orochimaru, however, responds by throwing a sword at Sai. The sword impales him, but Sai turns out to be just an ink clone. Orochimaru tells Sai that he has no manners, and that while addressing someone of a higher rank, he must do so face-to-face. The real Sai pops out of the ground, and Orochimaru tells him to prove that he can be trusted. As he attempts to retrieve something out of his pack, he is tackled by Kabuto. Sai's belongings fall out and scatter on the ground, including an envelope. Sai tells Orochimaru that the contents of the envelope is personally addressed to the Sannin by Danzō himself. After opening the envelope, Orochimaru tells Yamato that Sai would be coming with them, and the trio depart, unaware that they are being observed by Yamato's wood clone.

Meanwhile, the real Yamato uses his Hokage-Style Sixty-Year-Old Technique — Kakuan Entering Society with Bliss-Bringing Hands on a four-tailed Naruto, suppressing and sealing the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra and reverting him to back to human, although the process is excruciatingly painful and renders Naruto unconscious. Sakura notices that all of Naruto's skin has been burned off and that he is extremely wounded, and uses her Mystical Palm Technique to regenerate his skin. As she heals him, she asks Yamato to teach her his technique, but the captain explains that only he can perform that technique as he carries the DNA of the First Hokage within him. He tells her that the necklace that Naruto wears, which is the First Hokage's Necklace, is made of a special gem that is able to control a jinchūriki or a tailed beast when conjoined with the First Hokage's chakra, and therefore only those who have his cells can replicate it, although to a lesser degree than the First could have himself.

Sakura manages to regenerate Naruto's burned skin and Naruto regains consciousness. Upon seeing Sakura's tearful face, he believes Sai is to blame, and that he must have criticised her monstrous strength or called her ugly. Sakura tells him that while Sai called her ugly, he never mentioned her monstrous strength, and punches Naruto for mentioning it. Sakura then realises that Sai is not with them, and Yamato informs them that he has gone off with Orochimaru, most likely operating under a different mission than their own.

As they begin to set off, Naruto notices the destroyed Tenchi Bridge and the devastated terrain, noticing that the ground itself is soft. He asks what happened and why he was unconscious to begin with, and Sakura pins it on Orochimaru, telling Naruto that the Sannin knocked him out. Naruto is irritated that he was knocked out, while Yamato recalls Jiraiya telling him that Naruto lost consciousness after growing a fourth tail. The trio notices Sai's belongings on the floor, including his most prized possession - the picture book belonging to Sai's older brother. Sakura wonders why he would have left it, and Yamato concludes that he must have been in quite a rush. Naruto is still unable to believe that Sai would betray them, but Sakura remembers Tsunade warning her to be wary of Sai, as he is the subordinate of Danzō, someone who opposed and is the opposite of the Third Hokage and despises Tsunade for being his student and the granddaughter of the First. She relays Danzō's suspicious nature to her team, and Yamato tells them that he believes Danzō may be plotting the destruction of Konohagakure.

Naruto wonders what it means for there to be a plot to destroy Konoha. Sakura tells him that Danzō does not like Tsunade because, as the favourite student of the Third Hokage and the granddaughter of the First Hokage, she embodies their principles. Yamato also reveals that Tsunade hand picked every member of Konoha's current hierarchy, and everyone she selected also possesses those principles. Since Danzō does not agree with those principles, it is very likely that he is planning to collaborate with Orochimaru to destroy Konoha, so that Tsunade would become ousted as Hokage following the aftermath, allowing Danzō to become the new Hokage and to subsequently rebuild the village as he sees fit. Sakura deduces that while Orochimaru failed last time, Danzō is most likely offering internal support this time around, with Sai being the mutual conduit. Yamato tells them that Sai must be eliminated, and decides to follow Orochimaru, Sai and Kabuto. However, Naruto is still unable to properly see or move. Sakura wishes to wait until he recovers, but Yamato tells her to leave him where he is. Sakura alerts him that Kakashi would never have done that, prompting Yamato to tell her that he and Kakashi are different, and that they are not children to be protected. As shinobi of Konoha, they need to surpass Kakashi and complete their mission. Naruto manages to get up and tells Yamato that he will be able to keep up, and the team sets off.

Yamato's wood clone continues to pursue Orochimaru, Sai and Kabuto, and they decide to set a trap. Kabuto creates a corpse that resembles Sai and rigs it with kunai, shuriken and explosive tags. The Yamato wood clone inadvertently triggers the trap, cutting off his communication with the real Yamato.

As Yamato, Naruto and Sakura attempt to pursue them through the forest, Naruto's vision becomes blurred, causing him to nearly hit a tree trunk. He maneuvers himself out of the way in the nick of time, and Sakura, who was keeping her eyes on Naruto, attempts to get to higher ground as well; however, the wound in her right arm causes her to release her grip and she plummets. Naruto attempts to catch her in mid-air but fails, and Yamato speeds to the ground in order to safely catch her. Naruto notices the wound on her arm and asks how she got it, prompting Sakura to lie to him that it was caused by Orochimaru. She tells them that she will be fine, but Yamato tells her to rest. Despite his initial words that they could not waste any time in their pursuit, Yamato explains that there is a difference between rushing and being reckless. As Sakura attempts to heal her wounds (to no avail), Yamato appoints Naruto as his new combat partner and begins to walk into the woods in order for the pair to develop a battle strategy. However, as soon as they get out of Sakura's earshot, Yamato tells Naruto that it was him who caused Sakura's injury.

Yamato tells Naruto that he was the one who caused Sakura's injury, causing Naruto to recall a bloodied Jiraiya who questioned whether he retained any memory of the attack or not. Naruto realises that he was the one who destroyed Tenchi Bridge and the surrounding terrain, and Yamato berates him for succumbing to anger and unleashing a power he was already aware could hurt the individuals near him. Yamato tells Naruto that the Nine-Tailed Fox's power is not his own, and to not rely on that power to save Sasuke or protect Sakura. Instead, he is told to rely on his own natural abilities, which he claims will make Naruto strong enough.

Sai, Orochimaru and Kabuto continue to run on a river, heading to their base. They decide to stop and take a break in order for Kabuto clean his medical supplies and weapons. Kabuto tells Orochimaru that he needs a new male cadaver, between the ages of 15 and 17, to replace the one he had summoned to lay their trap. Sai notices that his picture book is not in his bag and recalls dropping his belongings when Kabuto had ambushed him.

As Naruto and Yamato discuss a combat strategy, Sakura decides to read Sai's picture book. She invites Naruto and Yamato to come take a look too, and they discover that the book is about two young boys who fight enemies, vanquishing them and taking their armor and weapons. In the middle, the two boys face off against one another; however, one page is blank while the other page has a black-haired boy with no face. Naruto points out that the black-haired boy is none other than Sai, and Sakura deduces that the other boy must be his brother, who had died.

Orochimaru, Sai and Kabuto finally reach their hideout. As they enter, Sai notices a man waiting for them, who he immediately realises is none other than Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke, with his Sharingan activated, tells Orochimaru that he is late.

Trivia[]

  • The Show had aired on Toonami with an uncut version. This show had a lot of promo commercials. It aired on Toonami on January 4, 2014 and it ended its run on September 7, 2024 by airing all 500 episodes total. It originally aired in 2009 on Disney XD originally known as Toon Disney.
  • So far only 80 characters have died in this series. Counting with the 41 character deaths with the Naruto part 1 series, this series holds the record of having 121 character deaths in the franchise.
  • On the "Naruto to Boruto The Live 2019" event in Japan, voice actress Nana Mizuki (Hinata) revealed that between recording sessions she would deliberately sit as far as possible from Junko Takeuchi (Naruto), mimicking how Hinata looked upon Naruto from the distance, and before the recording sessions of the final scenes she started sitting right next to Takeuchi, feeling both nervous and happy for it, in order to help convey Hinata's emotions when she finally gets to be with Naruto.
  • Team Kakashi is similar to Team Hanabi from Boruto, as both groups have a member (Sasuke and Sumire) that leave the group for personal reasons (Sasuke for gaining power, while for Sumire to join the Scientific Ninja Weapons Team) and get replace by someone else that is different (Sai and Tsubaki). Not only that the replacement member is very skilled, but is completely different. As Sai is from the Root Anbu while Kurogane Tsubaki is a samurai. The only difference is that Sai is from Konoha while Tsubaki is from the Land of Iron. Both teams didn't get along with the replacement at first until they saw eye to eye. Both replacement members also get along with someone in the group, (Sai gets along with Naruto while Tsubaki gets along with Hanabi the squad leader). Ironically it's later on reveal that Tsubaki is the Naruto version of Team Hanabi as she has a lot of similarities with him, while Wasabi takes after Sakura, Sumire acts like Hinata and it's unknown who Namida acts like on the team.
  • The English version of Naruto and Boruto being played by the same voice actress, is how the Dragon Ball Z franchise did with Goku and Gohan in the Japanese version. But this was only done for one Naruto video game. However the Japanese version of Adult Naruto and Pre-teen Boruto follows the English version of Adult Goku and Pre-teen Gohan being played by two different people.
  • The Japanese version of Chi-Chi and Goten being played by two different voice actresses, is also how the Naruto series does with Hinata and Himawari in the Japanese version & English version as well.
  • The Dragon Ball franchise has their What-If scenarios shown in the video games. Whereas the Naruto franchise shows their What-If scenarios in the anime. With an example being Tsunade's Infinite Tsukuyomi dream during the Fourth Shinobi War arc.
  • Masashi Kishimoto announced that he regretted killing Jiriaya.
  • Hinata and Neji's Gentle Fist fighting style is base off of the real-life Chinese martial art style that is call Baguazhang (aka Eight Trigrams), a fighting style usually made up of circular movements, by allowing the practitioner a wider range of motion and full use of momentum, without giving his or her opponent much of a chance or time for a direct strike. In Japan, it is known as Hakkesho.
  • The Drunken Fist fighting style of kung fu that Rock Lee uses is base on the real life 8 Immortals Zui Quan fighting style of Chinese martial arts. However, in the actual martial arts, intoxication is not a factor; in rather, the characteristic "drunken" movements are actually feints that are made to confuse the opponent for a period of time. This also could had been an inspiration as Jackie Chan used the exact same martial art style in the 1978 film, The Drunken Master.
  • Techniques from the Gentle Fist have also been called "Gentle Fist Art" (柔拳法) or "Gentle Step" (柔歩). Kenpo is also a popular Japanese term for Chinese martial arts. Although the supposed reading of "Gentle Fist Art" (柔拳法) is "Jukenpo" due to constant-conversion, in the name of this technique according to furigana it is "Jukenho".
  • Ironically Menma is the name of a Japanese bamboo which is also found in ramen.
  • The name Uzumaki means whirlpool, Naruto is named after the whirlpool of the city Naruto. Naruto is also a name for steamed fish-paste cake, sliced to decorate soup which has a spiral design in the middle.
  • In real life, the anime characters Hina and Denka are actual names of the two cats that are owned by Naruto's voice actress, Junko Takeuchi. While Junko herself voices Hina. Her other cat, Denka is voiced by both Kakashi's Japanese and English voice actor respectively.
  • One of the most memorable omake special appearances in Naruto Shippuuden is episode 129, where it features a festival with many dead famous characters.
  • Naruto Shippuuden episode 2 and 6 are the only episodes which have had two omakes.
  • The omake use recurring themes, such as "Uzumaki Naruto's Swirl Radio", "Yamato's Guest House" and "Tsunade's Room".
  • The omakes are the only time that the "fourth wall" is broken in the Naruto franchise.
  • The longest the show has gone without an omake is forty episodes (between 212 and 252).
  • Naruto Shippuuden episodes 83 and 188 are the only two episodes to have omakes that are canon.
  • The omake of Shippuden episode 166 was not originally canon, but the most significant event to occur in it (Naruto and Hinata's first meeting) was retold in a similar fashion in Naruto Shippuuden movie 7, albeit under different circumstances, but still canon for the film and franchise.
  • Even though the last canon episode of Naruto ended with chapter 244, the animators decided to start Shippuuden with a "preview" of what's to come by animating chapters 306-307 at the beginning of Shippuuden, and then go back to 245. Why? Because in Japan, it's expected that most, if not all, of the viewers read the manga, and so were itching to see Sasuke animated again, instead of waiting.
  • From episodes 24 to 27, they replaced the opening and ending songs with scenes from the new movie, like they did with the third movie. However, unlike the previous time they did this, they changed scenes with every episode.
  • Naruto Shippuuden is canon, until episode 54, where they lengthened the gap between the manga and anime, by adding a filler arc.
  • The first filler arc of Shippuden lasted from episode 54 to episode 72, when the canon Hidan and Kakuzu arc started.
  • During the Ending Theme "BACCHIKOI!" by DEV PARADE, you can see four "big" guys dancing dressed in four different shirts. They represent actual band members of DEV PARADE.
  • The second filler arc (which mixed canon material about Sanbi in with the filler material) lasted from episode 90 to episode 113, when the canon Search for Itachi arc started.
  • In episode 189 the bar that Sakura goes to is called Cat's Eye. This is a reference to the anime of the same name.
  • The title for episode 1 is the same as chapter 245 of the manga.
  • The title for episode 4 is the same as chapter 249 of the manga.
  • In episode 67, halfway through, after one of the villains is killed by Yamato's wood, the scene returns to the village and a billboard with the newest Naruto movie: Bonds, is shown on the right hand side.
