As a mom, I am always on the lookout for nutritious and delicious recipes that my toddler will not only enjoy but also benefit from. Today, I want to share a fantastic recipe that has become a staple in our household – Pea and Cream Cheese Pinwheels. Packed with the goodness of peas, cream cheese, and a touch of cheesy delight, these pinwheels are not only a treat for the taste buds but also a nutritional powerhouse for your little ones.

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz steamable pea bag
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • Parmesan or mozzarella cheese
  • Crescent roll dough

Instructions:

  1. Steam and Blend: Start by steaming the 12 oz pea bag according to the package instructions. Once steamed, transfer the peas to a blender along with 4 oz of cream cheese. Blend until you achieve a smooth and creamy consistency.
  2. Prepare the Crescent Roll Dough: Roll out the crescent roll dough and ensure there are no breaks in the dough. This step is crucial to ensure that the pea and cream cheese mixture stays securely inside the pinwheels.
  3. Spread the Pea Mixture: Evenly spread the pea and cream cheese mixture over the entire surface of the crescent roll dough. This vibrant green mixture not only adds a pop of color but also introduces essential nutrients into your toddler’s diet.
  4. Cheesy Topping: Sprinkle a generous amount of Parmesan or mozzarella cheese on top of the pea mixture. This step adds an extra layer of flavor that will undoubtedly appeal to your toddler’s taste buds.
  5. Roll it Up: Carefully roll up the crescent roll dough with the pea mixture and cheese inside, creating a log shape. This step is not only fun for your little one but also ensures that each bite contains a perfect balance of flavors.
  6. Slice into Pinwheels: Use a sharp knife to cut the rolled-up dough into 1-inch pieces, forming adorable pinwheels.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Preheat your oven and place the pinwheels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the pinwheels are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

My 21.5 month old loved these! He actually even loved the filling by itself, spread on low sodium Ritz crackers. Will definitely make again!

  3. I accidentally got puff pastry instead of crescent roll dough. Do you think this will work?

  4. Are you not supposed to use the entire pea mixture? Mine turned into gooey globs when I tried to cut it. I think next time I’ll try using maybe 1/4-1/3 of the mixture to see if that’ll be easier to roll and cut. Any tips?

    Reply

    1. Yes, you will have extra pea mixture so I wouldn’t use it all!
